How to take a photo that passes
- Stand about 4 ft (1.2 m) in front of a plain white or light wall, facing a window.
- Have someone else take the photo at eye level. Include your shoulders.
- Glasses off, hair away from your eyes, neutral expression, mouth closed.
- No filters, beauty mode or portrait blur. Use the original file, not a screenshot.
Official requirements
- 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), in color, taken in the last 6 months.
- Head 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm) from chin to top of head.
- Plain white or off-white background with no shadows, texture, objects or lines.
- Remove eyeglasses. Neutral expression or natural smile, both eyes open.
- Print on matte or glossy photo-quality paper. Do not filter, retouch or stretch the image.
Applying online to renew? Upload the original photo from your phone: the State Department asks for an unedited photo and lets you crop it inside the application.
The eye-height range is from the State Department photo composition template and is shown as guidance only.

Printing your U.S. passport photos
Download the 4×6 sheet and order it as a standard 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) photo print — at a pharmacy kiosk, their website, or on a home photo printer at 100% scale. A single 4 × 6 photo print costs roughly $0.16 at Walmart to $0.39 at CVS (prices vary by store). Cut along the marks; each photo measures 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm).
Questions
Will my photo be accepted?
BuckBooth sizes and frames your photo to the published rules and checks head size, position, straightness, sharpness and background. The issuing authority always makes the final decision, and a few things only you can control: lighting, no glasses, a neutral expression and a recent photo. If your photo is rejected, we refund you — see the refund policy.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is processed inside your browser. Our servers only see the PayPal order and an anonymous fingerprint of the file that ties your purchase to that photo.
Is this a subscription?
No. It is a single $1 payment through PayPal for one photo, and nothing is charged again.
What do I get for $1?
For one photo: a digital JPEG in the exact size for your document and a 4×6 inch print sheet with several copies and cut marks. You can switch documents and download again for the same photo.
How do I pay?
With PayPal. PayPal may also offer debit or credit card checkout without an account, depending on your country.
Can I use it for a Canadian passport?
Not for printed Canadian passport photos: Canada requires photos taken by a commercial photographer with their details on the back. BuckBooth does not offer Canadian specifications.
